How to colour in a watercolour style with Alcohol Markers – Be Inspired Blog Hop Nov ’24…

I am delighted to be able to join the Be Inspired Design Team, and can’t wait to share my project with you today, where I show how to colour in a watercolour style with alcohol markers, using the cutest Christmas Friends stamp set from Stampin’ Up!

You’ll likely see lots more Cute Christmas Characters from the rest of the team this month, as that is our theme and what we will all be designing around. I couldn’t resist the Christmas Friends stamp set when I saw it, and have used it a lot recently, especially as it is one of the sets we are using in my colouring course!

I absolutely love using the Stampin’ Blends alcohol markers, especially because you can get such a variety of effects using them – particularly when combined with the AMAZING colour lifter! I achieved this watercolour style with alcohol markers by keeping the colour light, wispy and by ample use of the color lifter, a marker that is filled with non-pigmented alcohol solution.

I used Crumb Cake, Smoky Slate, Pool Party and Petal Pink to achieve a soft and subtle look, which helps with the watercolour style here. I really love how it turned out! When I first started running my courses, I was surprised at the amount of people who never used the colour lifter.

While it is mainly known for using to ‘erase’ mistakes when you colour over the lines, this other use is absolutely brilliant. Simply use it over the colour, in small circle motions or short flicks, to create a textured look. And can you see the polar bear? How I have only added a tiny amount of Light Smoky Slate and then blended into white with the colour lifter? So effective.

To add to the watercolour effect I added the characters onto a watercolour background, made using my favourite Fresh Freesia. I love making these kinds of background, just by adding ink and water. While it was still wet I splashed more water on to create a cool, interesting pattern, and then added some flicks of colour once it was dry.

I kept this card design really simple, and all that was left was to add the sentiment and mount onto a Fresh Freesia card base. I let the stamp set and the colouring be the main focus here!

Why not have a go yourself at trying out a watercolour style with alcohol markers, it’s a lot of fun and a great skill to master.
