Country Birdhouse – Color Fusers Blog Hop – Oct 2024…

Now, this project might not be what you are expecting when you see the colour combination that the Color Fusers are working with this month, it really wasn’t my favourite (that is a huge understatement) but I brought in the trusty Country Birdhouse bundle, added some flowers and made it my own.

If you read on I’ll share how I got such light and delicate colours, and also how I managed to create a mix of browns and greys from just three colours. It’s all down to the beauty of colour mixing!

I am not a fan of Wild Wheat or Calypso Coral, personally. I know others love them, and each to their own, but I really struggle with them – until I mix them with water and dilute the strength of them. By simply mixing water we can create some beautiful soft colours, and that is where my heart lies.

So first up I made my background, using some watercolour paper and the colours Wild Wheat and Calypso Coral. I like to use re-inkers for watercolouring but you can just as easily pick up a load of colour from the stamp pad with an acrylic block and work with that. You could even use the Stampin’ Write markers!!

I laid some water on the paper and then blended both colours using my water painter, creating a nice free flowing effect. I decided to add some splatters too, I love how it turned out!

While this was drying, I set to work stamping and colouring the birdhouse and bird from the Country Birdhouse stamp set. I knew I wanted the lines on these to be defined, so I used our Saddle Brown Staz On to stamp with, and our (luckily allowed) neutral colour Crumb Cake to colour the birdhouse.

To get a deeper brown for the roof, I actually mixed some Calypso Coral to the Crumb Cake, and to make the grey for the bird hole I just added some Wild Wheat to the brown I had just made. I love how playing with colour mixing really opens up a new palette for us. You should give it a go sometime!

The flowers and leaves were brought in from the Sentimental Park stamp set, I love this one and really like how it complements the Country Birdhouse bundle. I didn’t stamp these in the Saddle Brown, as I was going for a softer look, so stamped them in stamped off Crumb Cake before watercolouring with Petal Pink, Wild Wheat and Crumb Cake. This did mean some of my lines blended out, but I think I am ok with that.

To finish the card I added a strip of Petal Park DSP to the bottom, a sentiment stamped in Crumb Cake and some linen thread. The whole card front was added to a Petal Pink card base and some gems added to the centres of the flowers.
