What is Paper Piecing in Cardmaking?

I am running an in person event on Friday, and when I told my ladies what we would be doing, they had one question for me… “what is paper piecing in cardmaking”. You see, it’s a term commonly used in the quilting community, but it is a technique that isn’t that well known when it comes to paper crafting, so I thought I would take the opportunity to show you all about it, too!

Paper piecing is when you use patterned paper to make up some of a stamped image, like in the picture below, the ladies dress… can you see how it is not coloured in but is actually some of our Designer Series Paper? Read on to see how to use this technique in your cardmaking.

A handmade card using the technique of paper piecing and the 'in the moment' stamp set from Stampin' Up!

First of all, stamp the image onto a piece of white card measuring 3″ x 3″. This will be your main image and the one that you eventually colour in with Alcohol Markers. Next, stamp the same image onto patterned paper of your choosing. Try to pick something that fits with your image, and if it is a busy pattern, choose which piece of it you want to show.

All you need to do then is fussy cut out the dress part of this image. Try not to think too hard when you chop her arms off though! It is a necessary step, lol. Once cut out, simply glue it straight over the main stamped image and then colour in the rest of it as you like.

I created a ‘how to’ video to show you step by step how to create this card, so if you have time, why not sit back and have a watch, simply click the graphic below.

I chose the colours Balmy Blue, Crumb Cake, Daffodil Delight and Ivory. The white card is then mounted onto a 3 3/16″ x 3 3/16″ piece of Balmy Blue cardstock. I stamped the sentiment onto a piece of Basic White card measuring 14cm x 10cm, added the panel with foam dots and then layered all of this onto a card blank made from Thick Whisper White.

I hope I have now answered the question ‘what is paper piecing in cardmaking’ and I hope that I have inspired you to have a go yourself.

Until next time, Happy Stamping xx
