I find making cards for men a challenge, but I think one of the keys is to have a good masculine themed stamp set, just like the Vintage Tools set that I am using here today. This set is filled with brilliant images that you can either simply stamp or stamp and colour. I decided to colour mine, to look like real vintage tool

Vintage Tools stamp set by Stampin' Up! full of old tools, hammers, chisels, screwdrivers etc. Perfect for making handmade cards for men

I can’t quite believe that I have been crafting for around 6 and a half years now, and I have only just realised that you can use both Brown and Grey in the same project!! I don’t think I have ever done so, at least not on this scale, but don’t they work well. This is especially useful to know when it comes to making handmade cards for men.

Someone recently asked me, why do we have three different colours of grey, and I tried to explain that each colour is slightly different, just like each purple is different, and so will ‘go’ better with other colours. Well, here I have used Gray Granite with Crumb Cake and Sahara Sand, because Gray Granite has brown undertones in it, rather than blue undertones, so it pairs really nicely.

The background of the card is made using the Artistic Mix Decorative Masks which can be found on P. 128 of the 2022-2023 Annual Catalogue. These are a fab set of 5 stencils, some of which are designed to layer over each other to create a two-tone effect. I have used them here with the same colour ink, Sahara Sand, but you could use two different colours too! To get the diamond pattern I have simply turned the masks until I got the angle that I wanted.

The base card here is actually Basic Grey. I wanted something darker to make the white layer really pop, and I think this just works here. I hope you agree!

I stamped the images in a mix of Gray Granite and Crumb Cake, as Sahara Sand was too light a colour for me to be able to colour nicely with the Stampin’ Blends, which I also used Gray Granite and Crumb Cake. The sentiment is stamped on a die cut from the Stylish Shapes dies and the vintage tools are then fussy cut and adhered onto the card, finished off with some of the Rustic Metallic Adhesive Backed Dots, don’t these look like nail heads!

I hope that my card has inspired you to have a go at making some handmade cards for men, and for more inspiration, why not check out the rest of the gang’s posts using the links below – I am sure you’ll find some beautiful cards and projects.

  1. Hi Heather, My husband would love this card as he does lots of wood working as a hobby now that he’s retired. Looks like I need to get this stamp set. Nice explanation for the multiple gray colors. Thank you for sharing!
